100% Q: Looking for new doctor, what kind of doctor should I look for?
My insurance has a list of doctors in their network on their web site, but I don't know if I need one who does internal medicine, general practice or family practice. What's the difference? I just need a doctor lol, any advice is appreciated.
A:It depends on your personal situation, which you didn't give us. But ANY doctor would do. As a rule, A General Practice Doctor can handle any issue that a person might come up with, but will defer to a specialist on most issues. If your G.P. refers you, it is often still covered by your Network. A Family Practice Doctor usually sees young children--and their parents. He'll refer you to a specialist if there is a need for something special (like the G.P.) An internal medicine doctor IS a specialist. He deals mostly with internal issues (stomach, lungs, etc.) but will refer you to another doctor if he doesn't cover the special area you may need this time. I'd always recommend the "FAMILY PRACTICE" doctor, as he's pretty versatile--but then, I have kids. If you don't have kids, go with the GENERAL PRACTICE doctor, unless you know in advance that you have specific internal issues (an ulcer that is always a problem) etc.

100% Q: Is there a simple way to look up in-depth info on a Dr.via the Web?I need major surg.&want to ck.surgeon out.?
Haven't rec'd any recommendations so need to go by what family doctor recommends. I will need major spinal surgery and the practice seems like a good one, but I wanted a particular well established doctor who seems to be one of the original founders of this Neurosurgy group. I am being put off as they try to assign me to someone else in the grp.Not comfortable with this.He is not a member of the AMA and that is all I know from the web.Only info. I have on him is what is written up in their neurosurgery&spine assoc. pamphlet Any help would be much appreciated since I have no one to turn to for recommendations. Thanks in advance for any help or info. Linda
A:Start with the AMA DocFinder, since it lists even non-AMA members: http://webapps.ama-assn.org/doctorfinder/html/patient.html Second, run a quick check in http://www.healthgrades.com/ ** The Health Grade supposedly lists this information, but it is not always as current as one would like. * Verify his credentials -- find your state at http://www.noah-health.org/en/usmd/state.html * Check your state medical board for any actions. Find your state at http://www.checkbook.org/doctors/medicalboard.cfm NOTE -- state boards are rated at http://www.citizen.org/publications/release.cfm?ID=7428 Third, check to find out if he has written any articles: http://www.pubmed.gov/ -- Search by last name and first initial ONLY You can register (for free) at AMBS and search for his advanced credentials - and compare them to the other doctor http://www.abms.org/login.asp Last, Google him -- look for links to medical schools - is he teaching? Ask the office to tell you about his Continuing Medical Education (CME) in 2006 -- did he go to a conference at a local medical school (which implies that he was paying attention) Has he _given_ Grand Rounds during the past two years (excellent sign) Was his CME a vacation/educational combination (bad sign) Last, look for an MD under the age of 35 to do a complex surgery. Surgery can be like doing a marathon, and younger doctors with more stamina are often the better choice.

100% Q: Can anyone recommend Web sites to explain in laymen's terms second-line treatment of small intestine cancer?
A family member has inoperable tumors and chemotherapy has not been working, so the doctor is stopping chemo and moving to "second-line therapy." Can anyone explain what this means (in laymen's terms) and if it is an indicator of prognosis? The family member has small intestine, or small bowel, cancer, which, from a cursory search online, seems hard to find information on and even harder in plain English. Not looking for hypertechnical resources, please.
A:See links on website below

A:The chances of you having stomach cancer at age 13 are very small. I think you probably have a bad case of anxiety. If you want to relieve your mind, see a doctor.
