100% Q: can you set up online used car sales transaction through yahoo.finance?
We are looking at a used car at a price well below market value. Seller in Maine claims that he will set up the transaction through yahoo!finance. We should deposit funds with yahoo!, he ships the car to us in Ohio & we will have 15 days to inspect before yahoo! releases funds to him. I don't see this type of transaction available on yahoo!'s web pages. Seems suspect
A:I checked the Yahoo site very carefully and didn't see any indication that they are prepared to serve as an escrow agent, which is what you described, in any transaction. It would be very unusual if they were in this business. Escrow agents tend to be very specialized, as they need to be because the types of risks involved vary from subject matter to subject matter (real estate v. car, for example).
Used cars would be a particularly difficult set of transactions because the physical condition of used cars varies so much. Thus, the chance of a disappointed buyer is very high. Again, that does not sound like a transaction Yahoo would handle.
Also a fifteen-day inspection is incredibly long. 24 to 48 hours would be closer to the norm. Fifteen days adds another "fishy" smell to the deal. There are all sorts of questions about insurance, damage to the car, and so on that could arise in a fifteen -day period.
Now Yahoo does carry advertisements for escrow agents who handles deals. But they have nothing to do with Yahoo and Yahoo of course would not guarantee them. I came across this paid list of escrow agents on the Yahoo auction site.
Did the seller say that he would give you title to the car? He shouldn't if he doesn't have his money in hand. And if you don't have title, then you can't get your own tag. It would be possible to leave everything in his name and you get no title, but then the fifteen days again sounds way too long. He would be assuming much more risk than a reasonable person would assume.
There are several things you can do, in addition, to just dropping the deal because it sounds too suspect.
For example, you could ask the seller for the names and addresses of three out of state people that he had done similar deals with. And you can ask whether he is talking about Yahoo as escrow agent or someone who advertises on Yahoo.
If this is a scam, you will soon be asked to send some cash. That's usually what these scams are really about - - getting some advance cash that the "seller" absconds with.
If you want to push the matter, propose as an alternative that you will set up an escrow account with an attorney in your town using the same terms he proposes. Tell him that you want an attorney so that you can have the state Bar Association back you up in dealing with the attorney if something goes wrong. It's hard to argue with that.
I would bet that the seller does not accepts an alternative arrangement. But if he does, that's a very good sign.
Of course there will be the question of who pays the two shipping costs if you decide to reject the automobile. That's going to be a not-trivial amount.
Good luck.

100% Q: Trustworthy?Buy used car online by sending $2500 down to Yahoo Shipping Center? w/name & address to send car?
Used car for sale online for a 1/3 of BLUE BOOK price. E-mailed for more info. Reply from "Michael Dugan" supposedly overseas in Peace Corp. Car supposedly in excellent new condition and being held at Yahoo Shipping Center (Does such a place exist and if so, Where)? Says he's selling so low for personal reasons he doesn't wish to disclose. Says to send $2500 down payment to Yahoo and he will have car delivered to me at my address at his cost. Yahoo will hold money til I decide whether I want to buy car. Car is exactly what I'm looking for for my son for an unbelievable price. This thing reeks SCAM! But I have his name and e-mail address as mdug@peacecorp.com and would like some answers or to alert you to this.
A:Yahoo isn't in the shipping business. It's a scam.
I could have bought a 1969 Shelby Mustang like new for $5000. It was worth $200,000. It was supposed to be a car that was donated to a charity. I told him I had my own plane and could fly down with cash to see it and buy it on the spot.(I lied) He really started squirming after that.

100% Q: What is the best online medium for selling a used car?
I have a 2001 Ford Taurus SES in great condition with 114k miles that I am trying to sell. I have tried the Houston Chronicle and have had no luck there. I have had a few responses via Craigslist but no one serious enough to make an appointment to see the car.
Out of places like autotrader, cars.com, vehix.com, etc., which site gets the most traffic and would be most likely to sell my car? Any other online sales suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
A:How are you managing the leads you do get?
The reason I ask is that if not handled correctly it will not matter how many calls come in...and it only takes one to sell the car.
Sellers often get too caught up in trying to sell the car when someone calls in. The focus should be to give as little information about the car as possible, yet just enough to make the caller want to see it. The goal of the conversation should be to get the appointment to see the car...the car will sell itself if the customer is there.
Craigslist is excellent and free. Autotrader.com is very popular in Texas...online as well as in print and would be the best form of advertising in that region.
Good luck

100% Q: What agency should I talk to if I want to report a scam involving buying used cars online?
I had a car for sale on an online site and I got an email offering to buy my car for the advertised price. This guy wants to send me a check for $10,000 for a $4,000 car. And then wants me to send him a check back for the balance, ok, obviously a scam. My question is who do I report this to? I already filed a complaint/observation with the FBI, but they are taking their sweet time to get back to me. I haven't actually been scammed yet, but if an agency wanted to work with me we could probably catch this guy. Thanks for any help.
A:Your local law enforcement office or the State attorneys general office, Department of motor verticals, State police.
