100% Q: Used Car Dealers: What pricing guide do you use to value cars?
I'm in Southern California. I'm going to give the Dealer's License a try. Polgas, I want real-life value. This is not for doing my taxes.
A:I am tempted to just say 'me, myself, and I', but that isn't exactly right. There are a couple of sources out there that help a dealer get an idea what a car should be worth, but they are NOT the Bible as far as authority goes. Kelly Blue Book, the NADA guide, and Edmunds are all simply a resource for suggestions as to what a car's value may be. Other factors determine what a car is really worth, such as: 1. Supply and demand Used Hyundais and Kias are NOT worth what the book says they should be because consumers won't buy those cars unless they are priced REALLY LOW. 2. Manufacturers reputation. I cannot buy a Honda or Toyota at a dealer auction for what the books say is wholesale value. Again, consumers know that these are reliable vehicles and are willing to pay more - so throw the book out the window. 3. Experience. Which can only be gained through experience... Pay too much for a car and watch it sit on the lot and eventually sell it for a loss just to get rid of it and get something else that may make you money. If you have never sold cars before, I suggest you go get experience at a dealership where you can learn the business. good luck

100% Q: what price guide do car traders use when you trade your car in?
The prices seem to vary from parkers, glass, what car etc...
A:They usually know how much they can get for your trade in then deduct the cost of valet/clean/service/warranty if they are going to put it back on their forecourt or deduct a handling charge if they just trade it out or ship it to the auction. Another way is the trader will ring round other traders to get a trade in underwritten, which means another trader will give him a blind price for the car, so he knows how much to allow for it.

100% Q: When you bought/buy a used car, did you follow the Kelly Blue Book guide?
for the past months ive been searching for a used car and i noticed if i follow the Blue Book pirce guide, it's actually ALOT harder to find the "right" car. When i found the "right" car, the price is either too high or too low for the condition...according to the blue book. Just wondering, did any of you follow the Blue book guide? If you didnt follow the blue book, do you regret purchasing that car? If you did follow the book, is there any problem that has occured which made you feel you hadnt followed the guide? For example : you wish you picked the other car
A:Kelley Blue Book is just a "guide". However a very good one. For instance, banks look at "book value" (Kelley value) when determining what a car is worth and therefore what amount they will finance. So, if a car has a Kelley retail value of $15,000 and the dealership is trying to sell it at exactly $15,000 the bank will turn down the loan because after tax, title, tags, warranty, GAP, etc. you are WAY OVER the value of the new car. Also, if you are trading a car in and you are "upside down" (you owe more than the car is worth) the difference is being added to the new vehicle loan which means that once again you are WAY OVER the new car's value and the bank won't do that. This is why dealerships are always pushing you for "down payment." This brings down the amount you are asking the bank for and therefore the bank will say yes and the dealership doesn't have to lose money discounting the car! Dealerships also look at the NADA (National Associationg of Dealer Auctions) to see what a car is going for on the auction circuit. This affects your trade-in value. For instance if Kelley Blue Book says your car is worth $5,000, but at auction there's 7 listed at $3,000, the dealership is NOT going to give you $5,000 because then they risk having to eat $2,000! Bottom line. DO NOT pay full Kelley retail value for a car. Tell the dealership you'll pay a little over wholesale value. And know your trade-in value, but expect to get at least $500 below what Kelley says it's worth.
