50% Q: Where are the top sites in the US for thyroid cancer evaluation and treatment?
Female, 62 years, on Synthroid for 20+ years after thyroid stopped functioning. Recent ultrasound shows two solid nodules (under 2 cm, one in each lobe) and a 3rd nodule "in the upper pole." Thyroglobulin blood test abnormal. Hoarse voice. Had thyroid scan today. Internist felt growth 3 wks ago which prompted ultrasound. Internist suggests biopsies next at area diagnostic center. Earliest date available Oct. 10. Is this good advice or should I seek endocrinologist exam now? Am a 6 year uterine cancer survivor at an excellent, regional cancer center, which does very little with thyroid cancer. What are the top centers for thyroid cancer? What would you recommend doing in my situation?
A:I had tumors on my thyroid and had it removed when I was seven years old. I would definitely talk to an endocrinologist, if I were you. No matter whether the advice you were given was good or not, the endocrinologist will know what is best for you. Baylor in Dallas is an excellent hospital. They've done all of my thyroid related surgeries.

50% Q: Does anyone have a child diagnosed with type one diabetes at a young age?
My daughter, now three, was diagnosed at 22 months old. She has been on Novolog and Lantus ever since diagnosis. Although she hasn't had any major problems, I have been checking into alternatives that don't require so many injections during the day. I have been doing alot of research on insulin pumps in young children, which show many benifits. If you have had any experience with a younger diabetic involving diffrent insulins, regimens, or pumps I would like to hear from you. (I am not treating her myself, she is seen by some of the worlds top endocrinologist, I would just like to hear of others experiences to learn more about the options we have been checking and other diabetics circumstances. So with that said, do not refer me to seek a medical professionals opinion.)
My daughter's blood glucose target range is 100-200, her Novolog is 1 unit per 1 carbohdrate serving, and 5 units of Lantus before bed. The dosage has changed several times, but this is her current plan.
A:My son is older than your daughter. He just turned 8, he was diagnosed last July, just before his 7th birthday. He is on an Animas pump and we LOVE IT!!!!!
There are quite a few little ones on pumps. I get on the American Diabetes Association website quite a bit with questions. There is a message board there called 'The Place for Parents". There are so many parents on it and I can not even begin to tell you how much they have all helped me this past year. I am not big on message boards and never have been but this one is so informative, caring, and understanding. Noone can know what it is like raising a child with diabetes but another parent of a child with diabetes. There are quite a few on there with pumps, I am pretty sure there are some who are your daughters age that are on a pump. If you can I would go and post this question to them. They are a GREAT group of people. Good luck!!! Here is the direct link to the Parents board:

33% Q: Do whole wheat foods have a lot of starch? Is low glycemic a good plan?
What about natural peanut butter (not jif or peter pan, the natural stuff where the oil separates at the top)? My endocrinologist said that I need to stay away from starchy foods because it messes with my insulin/hormones. I never eat white bread, but I do love wheat bread. What are some starchy foods to stay away from? Also, is low glycemic a good plan to follow if you cant have too much starch.
A:Got this from the diabetes.org web site:
Foods high in starch include:
* starchy vegetables like peas, corn, lima beans, and potatoes
* dried beans, lentils, and peas such as pinto beans, kidney beans, black eyed peas, and split peas
* grains like oats, barley, and rice. (The majority of grain products in the US are made from wheat flour. These include pasta, bread, and crackers but the variety is expanding to include other grains as well.)
The grain group can be broken down even further into whole grain or refined grain.
A grain, let's take wheat for example, contains three parts. The parts are the bran, germ, and the endosperm. The bran is the outer hard shell of the grain. It is the part of the grain that provides the most fiber and most of the B vitamins and minerals. The germ is the next layer and is packed with nutrients including essential fatty acids and vitamin E. The endosperm is the soft part in the center of the grain. It contains the starch. Whole grain means that the entire grain kernel is in the food.
If you eat a whole grain food, it contains the bran, germ, and endosperm so you get all of the nutrients that whole grains have to offer. If you eat a refined grain food, it contains only the endosperm or the starchy part so you miss out on a lot of vitamins and minerals. Because whole grains contain the entire grain, they are much more nutritious than refined grains.

I don't believe that peanuts have much starch, so PB should be fine.

50% Q: Does any have any suggestions on what I can do about my blook not being able to be drawn?
My rep. endocrinologist sent for me to have blood work done. Well this morning they poked me in both arms and on the top of my hand. They couldn't even get one drop. One said that maybe there was built up scar tissue from being repeatedly poked in the same arm and the other said that I may be dehydrated. Either way, I am going back tomorrow morning, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to ensure that they are able to get blood tomorrow?
A:drink. water. lots of it. a well hydrated body is easier to draw blood from.
no alcohol or coffee though...those dehydrate.
