100% Q: Do you think that teachers give you too much homework in school?

Why? I believe that too much homework is negatively affecting school students... What are your thoughts.

A:I would rather the teachers extend school for an hour or more than have this vast amount of coursework. Students should go home and relax; not have the extra pressure of coursework on their shoulders. I will sometimes stay up doing coursework and not get the sleep I need...just my thoughts :)

100% Q: High school homework - how much is too much?

My son will be a freshman next year and we went to orientation this week and the counselor told all the parents that high school students should be doing 2 hours of homework every night for every 1 hour they spend in a "core" class. They have 5 "core" classes, so that would be 10 hours of homework every night! They did say you could spread the 40 hours of homework over the entire week so you can spend the weekends doing some of it too. Isn't that unreasonable?

A:Make sure he gets his work done, but if he doesn't spend quite that much time on homework but he is trying, give him a break. That is a lot of homework for a new high school student to get used to and might take a while. In my opinion, that's a lot of hours, a lot of these students do have other responsibilities in their lives.

100% Q: UK only - do you think primary school children get too much homework?

My son is in year 1 (he's just turned 6 - most in his class are still 5). Each week he brings home 2 reading books to be read every night, a homework book with 'homework' and 'optional homework', which nonetheless should be done, a spelling sheet to be done every night (or they get sent back for the next week to be learned again along with that week's spellings) and anything else the teacher thinks of. Myself and my partner both work. 3 nights a week I can't pick my son up from the childminders until 5.30pm. She won't do homework with him. When am I supposed to fit all this in? I'm worried that he's going to start dropping behind - but then surely 5/6 year olds shouldn't be getting this much homework? It begs the question what are they actually doing in school? This seems excessive to me - anyone agree?

A:It sounds like an awful lot of homework for year one. Is it possible to change the childminder? most do help little ones with their homework. Reading his books should hopefully not take too long, they are quite short at that stage, and perhaps they can form part of the bedtime routine. Your son is unlikely to fall behind at this stage but I would talk to the teacher as it is late for a little one to be starting homework at half five, it is almost bed time and they also need to speak with you and unwind. It hasn't been all that long ago in America when summer vacations for students were treated as a sacred time for families and their children to have fun together, and have time for other interests such as travel. As the old adage says, doesn't too much work and no play make Jack a dull boy? There is a growing trend in many American school districts to load so much summer homework on students that they never have a real vacation, and neither do their families. If it hasn't happened yet in your own school district, that doesn't mean it isn't on the way. A little research will reveal these facts to you. Families were once considered to be intelligent enough to teach their children other things during summer vacations, which can often be more important and significant than extra work assigned by a teacher, who is not - by the way - always the fount of all knowledge.

A:Here in Hungary usually no homework is given to children unless they have to take an exam in August to be able to continue their class. And sometimes some reading is assigned, but teachers know they would forget it by November or March, so it is usually not compulsory.
