A:Because it is the only way to truly know how a company is doing... For example you have 2 stocks. Stock ABC is $5, Stock XYZ is $500 If stock ABC goes up $1 and stock XYZ goes up $50 which one did you make more money on? Well stock ABC appreciated 20% ($1/$5)... so if you invested $1000 in it you just made $200 gain. Stock XYZ on the other hand only appreciated 10% ($50/$500)... so your $1000 investment only gained $100. This would be an example where the higher priced stock moved more PRICE wise... but on a percentage basis (which is what counts when your money is invested) stock ABC clearly did better. A:The stock that existed prior to the company's emergence from Chapt. 11 was cancelled. I am not aware of any online source that retains historical price data for cancelled stocks. You will probably have to refer to a hardcopy source - many libraries, for example, have a long history of the Wall Street Journal available on microfiche. A:Stock price history is information of public record (not "public domain"), the same as baseball scores or the weather. If AT&T traded at a certain price on a certain date, that's a fact, and you can use that fact as you see fit in your analysis. Paraphrasing company info from their Web sites is a different matter; most Web sites are copyrighted as to their content, so if you choose to include company info other than information of public record, you need to rewrite it so that it's not a direct, word-for-word copy of their site. You might also, under Fair Use law, be able to include a short description -- a sentence from their mission statement, for example -- as an attributed quotation.
