100% Q: Anyone know a REALLY good English Springer Spaniel rescue or have advice about how to cure crazy behavior?
We are moving from Mi to SC and our poor Jack is not getting the attention he needs. He is SO high strung! We LOVE him so much but not sure what to do. He chewed out of his steel crate and now we started leaving him out when we leave (which is only for short periods of time since I am a stay at home mom). Well......on the days that the air is off and the windows are open (an inch) he pushes it open and chews through the screen and jumps out! We started shutting all the windows but he even pushed our daughters door open upstairs (must not have been latched all the way) and chewed THAT screen too! Cant believe he didnt jump out the window....it could have been fatal! We would love to keep him but feel like he needs more than we can give him. Took other "answers" advice before and started to run him every day but that wasnt enough either???? Should we have him fixed to calm him? Should we send him to a resuce? At a total loss but want what is best for Jack for sure. HELP!
A:I don't know of any Spaniel rescues, but will suggest what comes to mind....
The running is great; keep that up : )
I would buy him a Kong and Buster Cube, if he doesn't already have those -- they should get him to calm down for a bit, while he works at them.
It sounds like he's lacking mental stimulation to me -- he's bored and frustrated. I would take DP's advice, and take him to some classes. He may also be a good agility dog, if you'd like to try that with him.
In all honesty, I would try to exhaust every other option before sending him to a rescue, because they are so overcrowded.
Definately have him neutered, as well.
Best of luck : )

100% Q: Springer or Cocker Spaniel Breeders/Rescue in NW UK?
Hi, I am looking at buying a Springer or Cocker Spaniel from either a breeder or a rescue dog.
Has anyone got any recommendations of Rescue places or Breeders in the Lancs / Merseyside / Cheshire area ???
Thanks
Thanks so far for the replies... I know they are so very different and I am favouring a Cocker at the moment but if a Springer Rescue dog turned up I would find it difficult to turn them away...
Lucy... can u let me know the tel number of the breeder please ? Thanks :)
A:Hi - if you're looking to buy a puppy then you could try the Kennel Club website - it has lots of advice & holds a puppy register:
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/436
Another website that has details of breeders (with locations) & details of puppies is the Champdogs site (think this one is used by breeders who also show their dogs). It also has lists of clubs.
(Not sure which type of Cocker or which type of Springer you're interested in - so I've put them all here)
Cocker Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_cocker-spaniel.html
American Cocker Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_american-cocker-spaniel.html
English Springer Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_english-springer-spaniel.html
Welsh Springer Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_welsh-springer-spaniel.html
Plus you could try the ePupz site - it has lists of breeders & puppies & dogs for sale from various sources. That is searchable both by breed & area. You have to join to get the contact details - it's free - however, if you want to follow up an ad that is less than five days old, you'll have to pay (about £5 I think).
http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/index.asp
This site gives lists of clubs to contact about rescue - I've only linked to the one page:

100% Q: my younger springer spaniel keeps bullying our new rescue spaniel?
We adopted a springer spaniel at the weekend, he is the most calm dog I have ever had, the vet reckons he is about 4 or 5 years old. but my other springer is about 1 and a half years won't stop bullying him, even with the muzzle on he will still have a go at him. the new dog was beaten fairly badly in the past and has come to us in a bad shape and will need a good bit of vetinary care, the rest of the dogs have accepted him.
my younger spaniel was at the bottom of the pecking order before this new dog arrived
If anyone has any REAL ADVICE, i would greatly appreciate your answer
A:Well, I have two labs and a spaniel. It's hard to introduce animals to each other, they don't understand that we want them to get along. It can be difficult, but here's what I've heard from people:
1.) Get a towel and rub it on one of the dogs. Then put the towel underneath the bowl of the second dog, so when he's eating, he'll remember a pleasurable experience with the other dog's scent.
2.) Whenever the dogs see each other, give them a treat. This is how we've gotten my three dogs to mesh together along with my four cats.
3.) Get a child's gate. The dogs will get used to seeing each other, but if one goes to attack the other, the gate will be there. Try to calm the more aggressive dog while encouraging him to look at the other dog.
4.) Have them "meet" at a park. Dogs can get very territorial in a home and having them constantly interact in a house can lead to some major authority issues. By walking dogs in different directions and then having them meet in a neutral zone will make both dogs equals.
5.) Make sure each dog has their own space in your home and time in your life. My cocker and my first lab love their beds and that's "their" spot. But my second lab doesn't really like her bed, and doesn't really have a spot. This makes the other two dogs very territorial. We're trying to find some sort of way to make our third dog feel like she has a space in our home, but it's hard if they refuse the bedding you give them. Dogs don't always understand beds at first, so if one of the dogs refuses a bed, lay out a blanket.
6.) Walk them on different sides of the street. If you can find someone to walk them at the same time but at a distance, they will get used to seeing them, and because they're both out for a walk, they won't mind each other.
If your aggressive dog still is aggressive, try crate training. It worked for my first Lab who went after the Spaniel all the time. Just get a crate, and whenever you see bad behavior, scold the dog and put them in a crate. It sounds mean, but it's no worse than a time out.
I wish the best of luck for your dogs. And thank you for getting a rescue dog. I've worked at a shelter forever and all I read on yahoo answers is people looking for breeders or trying to find purebred pups. It makes me so mad. There's plenty of amazing rescue dogs and I hope yours will eventually fit into your other dog's alpha dog hierachy.

100% Q: Is my 6 year old female Springer Spaniel too old to breed? Should I have her spayed?
Hello,
I have a (full pedigree) 6 year old Springer Spaniel who I am thinking about having spayed, due to the increased risk of uterine infection after about the age of 8 (she was a rescue dog we have had since last year). However, before I ask the vet to do it, I need to rule out the possibility of her having puppies ever, and to make sure it is the best choice for her long term health, to have her spayed. The vet has said that if we do it, she needs to be spayed in the next two weeks, or otherwise wait until after she has her next season. I have small children and a busy life, and I don't think having puppies will be the best option because of that. I am partly thinking of the financial rewards of rearing puppies, and the joy for the dog to be able to have her own puppy (we would definitely keep one for her), but am also aware that there are plenty of dogs out there desperate for homes, without me bringing more into the world. Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you so much to everyone so far - am looking forward to everyone else's answers too. Your answers have been so helpful.
Just to clarify about her being a rescue dog. Her owner was elderly, and was moving into a retirement/old-people's home, and just a day before she was going to be taken into the dog's home, she was offered to us, and we took her on. So, she wasn't quite 'rescue', but about to be. Sorry to have not explained it well. That's why she was taken on un-spayed.
Hello everyone.
This is just to thank everyone who answered for your wonderful advice. I will have her spayed in the next few weeks.
A:She is actually old enough to have pyometra any time.. it does not Just happen after 8..
"she was a rescue dog"
Then she needs to be spayed,, most rescues require this.. she came from a less than ideal situatuion.. ended up in rescue.. at the very least she was not wanted by her origional owners,, and honestly any good reputable breeder will take a dog back for its liftime and give it a home.. and also require the dog be spayed if she was a pet,, the fact she was in rescue,,Guarentees she was a unfortunate victm of poorly planned unwanted, or litter for profit,, and although healthy herself,, you have no information on her "family" tree other than what is printed on a piece of paper and she could be a carrier of several bad health issues that could be passed on to your puppies..
"I am thinking of the finacical rewards"
Why people think breeding dogs is a big money maker,,, Heck the IRS sees it as a HOBBY.. so it is not a big cash deal..
Yes if you mass produce puppies, do your own tail docking, vaccinations, cheap food no prenatal care on mom no health checks.... and of couse do not have any problems,,, yes you can break even..and guess what these same people loose puppies, sell sick puppies to poor owners and loose mom,, and often their puppies do have serous health problems later in life.. but it does not matter as long as the profit is there..
Pups often have problems need vet exams, tail docking in this breed, mom needs vet care, of couse at this age she is at higher risk for complications needing emergency care, or death.. small littersize or one puppy,, puppies you cannot find homes for for 12-16-18 weeks.. and such.. your intended "profit" goes into the toilet..
"I have small children and a busy life"
Rasing a litter of well cared for well balance puppies,, is a another full time job,, you do not have time for much else when a litter is on the ground,,, Not only basic care of feeding and cleaning,, but daily handling, training, and as they get older,, individual sessions for each pup.. adds up to a lot of time.. the kids can help,,, but often loose intrest,,, and you have to do the majority...
you are already worried about the pet overpopulation problem.. you adopted a dog to help... So why negate everthing you have done to help by adding more dogs..
she will be happier,, HEALTHY honestly dogs do not have some emotional need to have puppies,,or physical one.. she will not loose out on something if she is spayed,,
you do not even know if she is a good mom,, some are not.. as far as keeping a pup.. often that results in less attention, of her and at the minimum sharing her family with another dog.. and that is a bum deal for her..she would be just as happy if not more so with another house mate that you can adopt,, she does not need to be the "mother" to somthing
Get her spayed,, love her.. if you are really intrested in breeding get involved with the breed and dogs.. have the kids get involved with the dog,, 4-H for example,, if the family has little intrest in this,, or does not have the time,, then you don't have time to propperly raise a litter of puppies..
good lucl
