100% Q: Would a dropped charge of unlawful conduct on public property prevent employment in health-care?
I was issued a ticket three years ago (at 20) for unlawful conduct on public property. I was on my usual walking route, and didn't realize that the park was closed. I didn't even understand what I was doing wrong, but was issued a misdemeanor ticket for being in the park late (unlawful conduct on public property). This is the same category as deficating in a public drinking fountain!! This ticket has caused me so much pain and anguish. I am a very law-abiding citizen, and I am very conservative in my behavior, but eyebrows are always raised when they see a dropped misdemeanor. It comes up every time I apply for a job. Now I have been offered a CNA job, pending backround checks and I am so paranoid. Do you think they would assume I was doing something of low moral character and withdraw an offer of employment?
A:Dropped charges do not go on your record, so I seriously doubt it. Besides....a misdemeanor is nothing!! Ask those who raise eyebrows if they've ever had a parking ticket and then tell them THAT is also classified as a misdemeanor!!

100% Q: How are convicted child molesters and felons still able to get employment at public schools?
As a mother I am disgusted by the thought that my small son could be taught by a child molester, rapist, or felon? I can't imagine how they are able to get hired at public schools. Don't the school districts do background checks? Is there a system so that schools can check nationwide? Are they only checking in their county or state? Does anyone know which states are hardest and which are the easiest? I would be interested in starting a campaign to make the background check nationwide, universal, and uniform so that these people cant bypass the system to get hired and hurt more children!
A:If you feel there is a sex offender working in the school, you need to report it. Every employee has to have a criminal background check. People who are registered sex offenders cannot work around children or near a school. Just because someone has been convicted of a felony, it does not mean they are a rapist, murder or child molester. A person who committed check forgery, driving without a license, in possession of someone else's prescription can be convicted of a felony. I agree that sex offenders and murders should not be around a school and by law sex offenders cannot be near a school. But other people convicted of a crime needs work and if the crime has nothing to do with the job they are applying for, they should have equal access to employment.

100% Q: Why is it extremely difficult to find employment with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health/Health Science?
I recently graduated from college (May 2007) and have been faithfully looking for employment in all arenas of public health in California. I also am interning with a non-profit agency that focuses on the low socioeconomic region of the town I live in, with multiple health issues ranging from prenatal health to HIV?AIDS. The jobs that I do qualify for are extremely low paying and cannot meet the bills that demand money constantly. I am interested in non-profit or public service agencies that are focusing on both domestic and international issues. All governmental or hospital agencies require some sort of connection to an employee that already works in the facility, which I do not have. I am young and a minority which should be an asset to any company, whereas it seems to be counting against me. I would love to gain employment in the Bay Area region, but do not mind travelling for work. Please help me!
A:It is difficult because a BA degree does not confer a formidable knowledge base, about two thirds of the courses are General ed units. In grad school, you begin to specialize in a field, where all your courses are in your discipline and you acquire research or applied skills. With a bachelors you need to develop skills along with your degree to become an attractive candidate to employers. You don't mention what type of job you want in public health or what type of work your internship entails and what you're learning(admin, advocacy, clinical) What kinds of skills do you have that a hospital would need? Do you have quantitative skills to work on research projects? Do you want to work in health education? If so, instruction, curriculum design are some key skills. Beyond being young and a minority, you need to describe to employers what skills you have to offer. If for instance, there is a job at a prevention/education program in an ethnic minority community and you understand the culture and how to provide information in an effective manner, and create awareness of say, early detection of breast cancer, you could describe your cross-cultural knowledge as a strength and as relevant to your ability to work with clients, community groups, etc. Although people with inside connections do have an easier time getting hired, lots of people are hired in the public sector and in medical settings who don't know anyone in the organization.
