A:I understand that having teeth taken out is a scarey process. The good news is that our medicines that we use work so well that you won't feel pain while he/she is working. You will hear noises (cracks, creeking, etc) because it is so close to your ear, way closer than the dentists ear. This is okay and normal. You will also feel lots of pushing and pulling, your head might even move around a bit, but again, this is normal. Try not to confuse the sensation of "push and pressure" with pain. Pain is a sharp pinch feeling in the mouth, and if that happens, let him/her know and they can add more medicine until you are comfortable. I do this every day in our emergency clinic, it is much more traumatic for those who are not mentally prepared for this. As for the temporary dentures, you can have those made and they can put them in right away. It will make it possible for you to chew and eat, but over time, you bone structure is going to change because those teeth are gone and you will have to have it relined constantly, as often as every 1-2 weeks for about 6 months. After you are completely healed and the bone stops changing (minimum of 8 weeks or more), you can have a permanent denture made that will fit much better. Of course, this is more $$$, so if you want to save $$$, go without the temporary denture for 8 weeks. In my opinion, it is worth the extra $$$$ to have teeth (temporary denture) at first and then to have a perm. denture made later that fits properly. Otherwise you will have a lifetime of not being able to speak well, eat or chew well and will be quite miserable with your denture. This is truly an investment, so be sure to treat it that way. Good luck, and you can always ask the dentist for laughing gas to make the extractions go smoother!
