100% Q: 13mm kidney stone, pain comes and goes, 14 weeks pregnant, should I get the surgery tuesday?
I have a 13mm stone on my left kidney (way too big to pass) that moves back and forth from a groove in my kidney to the ureter pelvis and blocks the urine flow. when it does that, I am in excruciating pain and always end up in the ER or urgent care. there's not all that much they can do since I'm pregnant, but I'm scheduled for them to put a stent in on tuesday so the urine can drain when the stone is in the way. But I haven't had the pain for a couple days now, and everything feels fine. I know the stone will probably move again, but I feel so guilty subjecting my tiny baby to the drugs and radiation for the surgery when I'm not in pain. Should I still get the surgery?
Oh, the other thing is I keep getting bladder infections like every other week. They're pretty sure it's from the stone blocking the urine. Sometimes the pain goes away for weeks, but then I have a few days of torture. I'm just having such a hard time making the decision about the surgery! They're going to give me a spinal and put the stent all the way up. I'll have it in for the rest of my pregnancy (5 1/2 more months).
I would be so appreciative of some advice! Thank you.
I can't have any procedure to actually remove the stone until after the pregnancy. and the reason I'm asking on here is because I can't get straight answers from my dr. They don't return my phone calls, and my urologist is convinced that the baby will be fine and wants me to basically shut up about it. he's a jerk to say the least. so I feel very alone and in the dark.
A:That's quite the complication that you have. If it's going to be 5 1/2 more months, then I think you should have the surgery. That's more than half the duration of the pregnancy. If it were 1 month, then you could probably go the rest of the way without the surgery.

100% Q: I'm going to have a kidney removed in 3 weeks. Is it a hard surgery? a lot of pain?
I'm told that the recovery is really painful? how long will I be laid up? What sort of pain control will they use. How long in hospital? Should I be scared?
I am.
A:Question #1: It's a relatively delicate procedure that requires skill and precision but thousands have been done for both health reasons and for transplant, both donor and recipient. I don't know if you're scheduled to have an open nephrectomy or a laparoscopic nephrectomy but the lap neph takes longer to do than the open but the procedure is far less invasive, recovery is faster and there's less postop pain.
Question #2: Not during the procedure and not immediately after. If you request pain med on a regular basis and before the pain gets bad, pain control will be more effective. You will not become addicted.
Question #3: Recovery times vary from one person to the next. About 3-6 weeks.
Question #4: Probably IV morphine postop and as needed. Morphine is the gold standard of pain meds.
Question #5: If you have an open neph, about one week. If you have a lap neph, 2-4 days.
Question #6: You will sail through this. Be more scared of not having the procedure because obviously it's been scheduled for a good reason, right?
I'll give you one more question on the house but after that I have to charge you. (Smile)

100% Q: Pain after Passing Kidney Stone?
For the last two weeks, my doctor has been monitoring me because I was passing a 6mm stone. If it hadn't passed by Wed, I would have been in surgery.
However, it passed tonight (after a lot of pain). The problem is that I'm still having pain. There's also burning when urinating.
I've had lots of stones before, it's a family thing...but there was never pain afterwards. Is this normal?
BTW, I've been on Cipro so I shouldn't have an infection...I do see the doc later this morning.
A:Get it checked out if it doesn't clear up... you may have a kidney infection. My mom got one after having a kidney stone, she had similar symptoms to what you are describing.

100% Q: I have a swollen kidney from being 33 weeks pregnant help!?
I could get something called a stent put in to relieve the pressure of my kidney but the thing is I was told it would just have to be removed after the baby is born. And that is in like just a few weeks from now. I don't have a fever or anything serious just back pain and pressure. I am also curious as to the labor. Like can I deliver alright with a swollen kidney? I don't see why not but I am not sure. In the end I just don't want to waste my time getting some type of surgery done when in a couple of weeks all of this will be over. I also was told that a stent could make you go into contractions and I don't want my baby to come any earlier than he has to for his own safety. Please I need helpful advice. Thank you for listening.
A:my advise is to wait. PLEASE!!! I am now 38 weeks and will deliver on friday due to my Hydronephrosis. I had a stent put in at at 33 weeks and even though it was a simple surgery it was the worst pain i had ever felt in my life and that includes c-section and apendix. I was warned that there was a posibility that it could put me into labor and sure enough they had to race me out of recovery to stop my contractions. And 2 days later i went into labor again. After almost 2 weeks with the stent in I had it removed. The pain went away imediatly and so did the blood in my urine!! Yes, after the stent was in I had bloody urine for 2 weeks!! All the doctors i have seen have told me stents in pregnant women dont have the best reputation. Good Luck.
