The books are based on old information, sometimes sales from as long as three months ago! Most dealers now are using proprietary software offered by one of the largest dealer auction companies in the USA, to get actual data on sales of comparable vehicles, updated daily! Seeing as it is proprietary, members of the public can not access this data, just as a retail buyer is not allowed into a dealer auction. The publicly accessible sites are a bit more accurate than the books, but they still do not have as current a database.

Edmund's SEEMS to be based on what the car is going for at any given time...It seems to trend more for demand of any given vehicle at any given time. "Fair" in a sale is dependent on the person offering and the person accepting. If they're both happy, then the deal is fair; if one feels they were cheated then they didn't negotiate very well. Given that you have received little/no interest in the car, and his offer is higher than Edmund's, perhaps you should seriously consider the offer.

A:Consumers Guide Automotive always has low used car prices listed. I assume you are trying to show a seller that the car he has is not worth the price he's asking. If the seller is an individual, make sure you are looking at the Wholesale or Trade Value. That middle number (Private Party value) is worthless. Base your offer price on the trade in value. To be objective and honest you need to take all the prices you can find, from CGA, NADA, Kelly and Edmunds and calculate the average. You might even want to look at Autotrader too. Using this average is closer to what the car is really worth.
