The Chess'n Math Association (or Chess and Math Association) is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing chess into Canadian schools. Founded in 1985 by Larry Bevand, who still serves as its Executive Director, it bills itself as "Canada's National Scholastic Chess Organization", although it is not affiliated with the Chess Federation of Canada, Canada's official FIDE-recognized chess organization. Chess'n Math runs hundreds of tournaments for kids K-12 across Canada, including an annual Canadian Chess Challenge. These tournaments are rated according to its own rating system. It also offers chess lessons and camps, produces a magazine Scholar's Mate, and runs the Strategy game stores located in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. CMA has sponsored several chess futurity events, to provide international title norm opportunities for promising young Canadian players.....

100% Q: Should I give my family a different christmas?
For christmas day, I was thinking of giving my kids maths puzzles instead of gifts, and for my wife I would compose a list of ways that she has angered or saddened me in the last year (although she has hinted at a necklace). Is this a way forward for a family christmas?
A:no...give thems as allways, love and caring, its the best gift...the presents aren t that important

100% Q: Help! I need a fairly simplistic math puzzle/trick for a presentation.??
I need a math trick/game for my math course......something that can be proven with a fairly simple proof.....Ive looked everywhere and most of teh stuff is logic problems...(which have ridiculously complex proofs...) it can be a card trick/dice/dominoes but again, not too in depth. This is for a college course but she said we can do even a kids math trick as long as its proven. Any suggestions/websites would be great....Ive done so much research already!!! arrrghhghh
A:How about this: Pick any number (well, almost any. less than 2,222,209 & positive let's say.) Add 14 Multiply by 9 Subtract 8 Add up all the digits Add 5 Add up all the digits again Subtract 6... You now have the number zero regardless of what number you picked first. x x+14 9x + 126 9x + 118 sum of digits of (9x + 118) ? 9x + 118 ? 1 (mod 9) * 1 + 5 = 6 (mod 9) 6 - 6 = 0 *You may be required to prove that the sum of the digits of a number mod 9 is the same as the number mod 9

100% Q: maths puzzles?
in school we are preparing a maths evening for some kids in year six does anyone know of any good puzzles we could get them to do? we need something we can put on tables like the ones where you have to reconstruct a shape but different anything really acctually that they might enjoy they are 11 yes
A:You could do the "TOPOLOGY thing"... can't remember exactly what it is called (might be Euclidian something or other?!), but essentially any shape is defined by NODES + REGIONS = ARCS + 2 Show them what Nodes, Arcs and Regions are and then see if they can come up with a shape that doesnt conform to it... or conversely... don't show the equation and see if they can come up with a relationship between the number of Nodes, Arcs and Regions. These are 11 year olds (right?)... which means they won't have come across equations yet, but will know shapes and how to record data about them... its a good introduction to equations without scaring the hell out of them. I used it in Teacher Training back in college for some 11/12 year olds and seemed to keep them quiet for an hour or two and made the smarter ones go "Ahhh!" at the end, when you show them what its about. Of course, if the really smart ones ask why, then you might wanna do some background reading first!!!

100% Q: Help me defeat my coworkers in the math puzzle of the month?
The new school year has just started, and the head of the math department has started our monthly challenge again. The puzzles are really put up for the kids, but all staff other than math teachers are allowed to participate. There are about 5 staff members, myself included, who compete fiercely every month to be the first to turn in the correct answer. I guess my skills got rusty over the summer break because this one has me stumped. Can any math geniuses out there give me a hand with this one? If - 2 # 6 = 4 3 # 7 = 5 10 # 2 = 6 4 # 4 = 4 Then 13 # 12 = ? What mathmatical operation does # stand for, and what is the answer to 13 # 12 =
A:Cheater!!!! lol, you should be ashamed! I am shocked the first person that answered this got it b/c I didn't know!

A:# is average: (2+6)/2 = 4 (3+7)/2 = 5 (10+2)/2 = 6 so (13+12)/2 = 12.5 The answer is: 12.5
