Details can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephus_problem, though the phrasing there is slightly different, so the formulas on the page do not hold exactly, but the method of solution will. To solve this from scratch, there are at least two good ways to approach this, which I believe were mentioned above: (1) solve it for 1, 2, 3, 4, ... students, and look for a pattern, OR (2) let f(n) be the seat to sit in with n students, then find f(2*n) and f(2*n - 1) in terms of n. For method (2) it is easy to see that f(2*n) = 2*f(n), since you just do the process with the evens. It is a little bit trickier to see that f(2*n - 1) = 2*(f(n) + 1), becaue you do this process with the evens greater than or equal to 4. A general formula for f(n) where n = 2^i + j, where 2^i is the largest power of 2 less than n, is f(n) = 2*j. So for 23, we see that 23 = 16 + 7, so the answer is 2*7= 14. Since 18 = 16 + 2, the best seat is 2*2 = 4. Finally, for 41 = 32 + 9, the best seat is 18. Hope this gets you an A, without having to do the worksheet!
