John, an engineering student, is on vacation and standing on Mt. San Jacinto, looking down on Palm Springs, whose elevation is 487 ft above sea level. John is 8516 ft above sea level. It is a clear day so John can easily see 30 mi in a semicircle from his viewpoint. How many acres can John see from where he is standing? Be sure to include your assumptions with your answer. This is supposed to be an engineering problem solving question, but I have no idea where to begin with this. Please help.

A:radius, r r^2=(30miles)^2-(8516-487feet)^2 area=(pi*r^2)/2 feet^2 just change your unit from miles-->feet, and feet^2-->acres

100% Q: How can I get better at math problem solving for Mathcounts?

Hello, I'm preparing for the Mathcounts competition. I'm in the class at my school and consider myself pretty good at math, having taught myself Algebra 1 and being in Geometry in 8th grade, but for whatever reason, most of those Mathcounts "tests" just go past me and I end up getting less right than people in a lower math class than me! I really need help, and any free resources would be so helpful. Thanks!

Any good math book that has lots of interesting problems which cover number theory, probability theory, and other popular math theories? If those problems are similar to the problems that are used in some job interviews in companies like Microsoft, that'd be great. I have a graduate degree, but want to keep sharpening my mind. A:I use a book called The Magic of Numbers by Benedict Gross and Joe Harris for my Math Problem Solving class. It's a really good book, and all of us really like it. It has a very comprehensive explanation on all of the problem solving questions and answers.

Before he could run a ghoul stole half of the candy that was left plus three pieces. Billy only had 3 pieces left. How much candy did he have originally? I got 46 candies originally. How bout you?

Let's call this y for now (y = x/2 - 1) The ghost took (y/2)+2 pieces of candy, which left Billy with y - (y/2)+2) pieces, or y/2 - 2. Let's call this z for now (z = y/2 - 2) Then a ghoul took (z/2)+3 pieces of candy, which left Billy with z - (z/2)+3) pieces, or z/2 - 3. At this point Billy only had 3 pieces. Now let's solve: 3 = z/2 - 3 6 = z/2 z = 12 Now let's solve for y: z = y/2 - 2 = 12 y/2 = 14 y = 28 Now we can solve for x: 28 = y = x/2 - 1 29 = x/2 x = 58 Hmmmm .... I get 58 pieces, not 46.
