100% Q: How could hydrochlorothiazide help in the treatment of a hydrocele?
I was told by a doctor that hydrochlorothiazide could help reduce the amount of fluid collected in a hydrocele. Is this true? How would this work? Can anyone provide some information on this as it appears hydrochlorothiazide is used to reduce the amount of water the kidneys can collect. I don't see how this could help with a hydrocele?
A:The mechanism of action for HCTZ like the other responder said is diuresis. Technically speaking, it decreases the amount of sodium that your kidneys reabsorb, thus causing increased urination. This can be to one's advantage for patients with hypertension which is why thiazides are first line for hypertension. However, I've never seen my attendings or residents prescribe HCTZ for a hydrocele. This is because the cause of the hydrocele will not be fixed by the medication. The way to fix the hydrocele is to correct the underlying problem
I hope this helps.

100% Q: How does adderall and hydrochlorothiazide react when taken together?
I want to lower my blood pressure when I take adderall by taking a water pill called hydrochlorothiazide. On my prescription info it warns me to tell my doctor when I take both together. Why? What is the reaction from taking a water pill and adderall?
Is it okay to do it if I drink mass amounts of water?
A:Adderall (amphetamine and dextroamphetamine) affects the blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic, removes extra water from the body in order to maintain the blood pressure within the parameters set by your physician.
If you have moderate to severe high blood pressure, please point your medications and your condition to your doctor. It is not recommended to drink extra fluid because it will simply make the hydrochlorothiazide's dose ineffective; plus ingesting extra fluid might cause hypertension due to your body's condition and may strain the heart.

100% Q: I am almost eight weeks pregnant. Is it safe to continue on hydrochlorothiazide?
I've been on blood pressure medication for ten months now. My OB said that it was okay to take it. Just want to know if anyone else has been in a similar situation.
A:Only trust your doctor for this. However, I, too was taking hydrochlorothiazide when I found out I was pregnant. Mine was an unexpected pregnancy and I conceived when I was taking birth control pills (for 11 years!). I had been taking migraine medication along with the blood pressure meds and the Pill. When it was discovered I was pregnant, my doctor chose to take me off all medications until we did some tests. I was already 17 weeks along, 38 years old, and developed Gestational Diabetes so I was closely monitored. My blood pressure remained only slightly elevated throughout my pregnancy. I had to switch doctors and go to the high risk diabetic clinic. That team of health care professionals opted not to put me back on the blood pressure medication. Each patient and each doctor is different so only trust your doctor for sure. Basically, hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic so probably is not generally harmful to the baby while high blood pressure can be dangerous to both mom and baby. I took only a minimal dose of 25 mg.
