But the deforestation started about 300 years ago when much of the flat lands was deforested to make room for the huge Sugar and Tobacco plantations that were the rule on an island where Slaves were brought to provide cheap labor. When the Haitians rose up in revolt, the French went to the mountains to try to escape from the Haitians and, when they were discovered, the Haitians BURNED THE MOUNTAINS.. and that was the REAL beginning of the massive deforestation that has just about stripped the island of vegetation... once the trees were gone... the top soil washed off and the vegetation was gone. Haitians ARE THEIR OWN WORST ENEMY... and have been for centuries.
