100% Q: Can I purchase BCBS group health insurance in the state of TEXAS?

(The state of Texas part is key). My husband is self employed, the owner of a small consulting business. We will be moving to Texas very soon. Where we live currently, we have BCBS group health insurance. We would like to have BCBS Group health insurance in Texas, too, but I am not finding it. We do not want small business owner health insurance because we get a better rate with group insurance. Please do not reply with spam. I am going to end my employer health insurance coverage if I can find a better one. Are there any associations or organizations one can join that provide members a way to join a group health insurance plan? I'm thinking of organizations like art organizations, or professional organizations.

A:"Group" policies through associations and the like are a marketing gimmick designed to make the average consumer think they are getting a deal. The premium for these plans are either the same as a regular individual policy or the benefits are cut to allow a lower premium. Any savings I've ever seen are more than made up by the dues of the association. The plans are individually underwritten so you can be denied or the rates increased base on your health.

I own a small business and would like to give my employees more benefit options. I've tried to research insurance plans online, but every insurance site just wants me to call in to find out. Do any of you know? Are group health insurance rates a lot cheaper than regular rates?

A:The larger the group the cheaper the rates because they can spread the risk. If you have a professional Association they might offer group plans. You need at least 10 employees to participate in most places otherwise. The rate will be a little high but it benefits employees that might not be able to get insurance otherwise. IE preexisting conditions (cancer,kidney disease,etc). Good luck.
