A:General practice refers to someone who forgoes a full residency training and begins practice after one year of "internship". Family Practice is a three year program of study after medical school which includes the internship. Internal medicine is a more specialized study of four or five years which is more intense. In medical school, you do not need to major, you will take electives in the third and fourth year that help you decide on a speciality. Many enter medical school with their mind set on one specialty and learn that the specialty is not what they expected (like I did). Very few schools in the US combine undergraduate and medical studies, I did graduate University of Miami,School of Medicine, with one girl who was 19 she was exceptional and already had a BA. Medical schools are looking for people with more flexibilty in their plans than someone in high school that has little real world experience.

They care for their patients for life — from teen years through old age. Internists have special training that focuses on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. However, both could be a primary care physician and take care of routine issues and check-ups.

However, medical schools have extensive prerequisite courses, so many people choose majors that already require these prerequisites. Such majors might include: Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or Anatomy and Physiology. I haven't looked into this in years, but when I was in college, med schools usually required: 1 year of chemistry 1 year of physics 1 year of calculus 1 year of biology 1 year of organic chemistry People who major in things that do not require these classes have to take them in addition to their own major's requirements.
