A:a tax moves the quantity left, resulting in deadweightloss. there is no equilibrium quantity with a tax, buyers pay a higher price and sellers pay a lower one. A price ceiling would be imposed under equilibrium say if OPEC raises the price of oil per barrel. this would result in a shortage of gas (Q demanded > Q supplied).

I have a 2005 Vulcan 800. I would like to install a gas gauge rather than rely on trip meter and reserve tank. I found that there are after market fuel gauges for Harley Davidson's but have not found them for my Vulcan.

I know the knee jerk reaction would be to say, yes, sock it to them. One small problem, is it going to get more gas in the market place or will they produce less? You might want to look at the opportunity to let them add refineries and get more in the market place. In other words, look at the option of letting the supply get near the demand.

A:The free market determines prices as opposed to local government control. The free market will be more accurate based on supply and demand and issues that can effect gas prices.
If gas prices are high in the free market verses local government control, the local government has to pay the difference in government charged prices and real market prices. The result can increase local government taxes to make up the difference.
Allowing the free market (unregulated pricing) gives relief to government from the controlled price liability.
