100% Q: Need a good kidney specialist.. One third of a kidney functioning. Diabetic and tumors. Need help.?
I have a friend who has tumors on her kidneys. She is diabetic and only has 1/3 of one kidney left functioning. I am trying to find her a good kidney specialist. Does anyone have any ideas on a Dr. that could help her? She will die if something is not done right away. Dr.'s here are not helping her. They say that she cannot have a transplant. I am hoping that there would be a doctor out there that could help. I would appreciate any input. Thank you and sincerely.
A:A patient with that amount of kidney function loss would no doubt already be under the care of a nephrologist (kidney specialist) I think this question seems a little odd since I would have to wonder without medical specialty care how on earth she A) knows she has only 1/3 of 1 kidney functioning and B) how does she know she has tumors. It is common for diabetics to be on dialysis and this person would undoubtedly be on dialysis again prescribed by a physician at some level. Are you sure you really have all the facts here?

100% Q: When do I see a specialist for kidney stones?
About 1 1/2 years ago I went to the ER with severe pain to the left of my back on the lower side (flank area) with the pain radiating around my hip and down my inside thigh. It sorta felt like spasms inside of me. My white blood cells were elevated so Dr. hospitalized me for IV treatment, released me the next day and directed me to attend therapy for my back. The pain continued so he decided to x-ray my lower back. The results showed that my left kidney was three times the size of my right and then ordered a MRI which reflected a good sized mass within my left kidney. My treatment pretty much stopped there. This was about a year ago. My pain has continued, usually lasts for 2 - 3 days at a time, stops, then resumes within a week or two, but it has not been as severe as that 1st occurance. Its more a dull irritating continual pain. Dr did tell me at one time that with kidney stones the pain is very very severe and that it doesn't involve pain that radiates down the thigh?
A:The physician should have referred you to a Nephrologist or Urologist then and there, it's hard to believe that you've gone along for so long without any followup.
It appears that the condition was misdiagnosed the first time around but the story gets worse as you relate it for you should have been sent to a specialist after the MRI.
Don't waste any time, this could be very serious.

100% Q: My brother said he has too much potassium in his kidney's and need to see a specialist. What does this mean
I have some doubts about this being the reason he is seeing a specialist. He is an alcoholic and a diabetic and has been for over 20 years. This is the first blood work he has had in decades. Can someone explain this to me or what else may be going on in this case. Thank you.
A:The wastes in your blood come from the normal breakdown of active muscle and from the food you eat. Your body uses the food for energy and self-repair. After your body has taken what it needs from the food, waste is sent to the blood. If your kidneys did not remove these wastes, the wastes would build up in the blood and damage your body.
The actual filtering occurs in tiny units inside your kidneys called nephrons. Every kidney has about a million nephrons. In the nephron, tiny blood vessels called capillaries intertwine with tiny urine-carrying tubes called tubules. A complicated chemical exchange takes place, as waste materials and water leave your blood and enter your urinary system.
At first, the tubules receive a combination of waste materials and chemicals that your body can still use. Your kidneys measure out chemicals like sodium, phosphorus, and potassium and release them back to the blood to return to the body. In this way, your kidneys regulate the body's level of these substances. The right balance is necessary for life, but excess levels can be harmful. In the nephron (left), tiny blood vessels intertwine with urine-collecting tubes. Each kidney contains about 1 million nephrons.
