everyday math curriculum
Everyday Mathematics is a pre-kindergarten through 6th grade standards-based mathematics curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project, and published by Wright Group/McGraw-Hill. Over 175,000 classrooms and 2.8 million students are currently using Everyday Mathematics, and it is being adopted by a steadily increasing number of schools each year.[citation needed]....

100% Q: Can someone give me more information about the Sunshine Math curriculum?
My Kindergartener has been given Sunshine Math worksheets to do at home. Sunshine Math is the "advanced math" curriculum of choice by his school, while "Everyday Math" is the curriculum they use in the classroom. My son just brought a Kindergarten packet, with pages "Mercury 1 - Mercury 20" home, and they were all SO EASY. He did all 20 worksheets in under a half an hour with no help from mom. I'm wondering how much more is in the Kindergarten packet.... like is there a "Venus" section after "Mercury"? How many sections are there? I'm wondering if we should skip a few? What do you think about this curriculum. I know nothing about it, so any information and advice would be appreciated.
A:This is a great tool. See your child's teacher about moving to the next level. The sunshine math program goes to eighth grade. Good Luck.

100% Q: What is Everyday Math like?
My school is going to start using Everyday Math curriculum next year. What should I expect. What is it like?
A:Everyday Math is a program that came from researchers from the University of Chicago. There are three guiding principles for the program:
"
•Students acquire knowledge and skills, and develop an understanding of mathematics from their own experience. Mathematics is more meaningful when it is rooted in real life contexts and situations, and when children are given the opportunity to become actively involved in learning. Teachers and other adults play a very important role in providing children with rich and meaningful mathematical experiences.?
•Children begin school with more mathematical knowledge and intuition than previously believed. A K-6 curriculum should build on this intuitive and concrete foundation, gradually helping children gain an understanding of the abstract and symbolic.?
•Teachers, and their ability to provide excellent instruction, are the key factors in the success of any program. Previous efforts to reform mathematics instruction failed because they did not adequately consider the working lives of teachers."
The program addresses learning in the following mathematical strands:
•Algebra and Uses of Variables
•Data and Chance
•Geometry and Spatial Sense
•Measures and Measurement
•Numeration and Order
•Patterns, Functions, and Sequences
•Operations
•Reference Frames
There are a lot of hands-on activities. Also there is a great focus on problem solving. Students don't learn from drill and kill. Students learn may different ways to solve a problem. The lessons are well-designed. I do say the program is short of the necessary practice that students may need.
You will hate Everyday Math when you first begin as is it might not be the approach as you are used to. (Students and parents feel this way too.) My advice to you is to be patient. It gets better over time, and once your students have had this program for a couple of years, your school should notice a definite increase in student scores.
You may need to do some aligning with the standards of your particular state, but I found that for my state, lessons were closely aligned.

100% Q: Do you skip chapters in your math text in order to meet tested state standards in time?
I am trying to compare our school district's math curriculum with other math curriculums. Currently, we use EveryDay Math. In order to be ready for state assessments in March, I have to skip certain lessons and chapters because they don't target a tested standard. What book/company do you use? Are you able to go straight through the book or do you have to skip certain lessons/chapters in order to cover the required standards in time for the assessments?
A:no we go comprehensively through everything but at an incredibly fast pace so i wonder whether it's worth it. i personally would rather skip the odd chapter but each school has their own methods i suppose

100% Q: Do you know of any websites that have worksheets/lesson plans for 5th graders?
I am 13 and next week I start tutoring my neighbor's 10 year old daughter in math. In NYC, 5th graders use Everyday Math by McGraw-Hill. I cannot find worksheets or lesson plans for this curriculum.
A:Here is the web site with papers, explanations, extra work and worksheets etc.

100% Q: Why do teachers find it necessary to bring their own political views into the curriculum?
Why do teachers find it necessary to bring their own political views into the curriculum?
Who do they think they are? It's the same as teaching kids that only one religion is right. There is no difference. I get tired of hearing that these unqualified people who are suppose to be teaching specifics about history, science and math, are using it as a soap box for young impressionable minds to preach their own political agenda and viewpoints. Gag them and string them up. They get so used to being unchallenged in their everyday interaction with the kids, they maintain a supercillious attitude towards adults and think that they can write history by extolling their beliefs politically to kids in the classrooms. So many people scream about practicing religion in the classroom, so why aren't they screaming about teachers that spew out their liberal or conservative political beliefs. They are usually the liberal viewpoints that are being expounded. Let's hear it for a gag order on this!
Crabby B. It had nothing to do with race. It was an answer from a kid on Yahoo, wondering if it was right what his teacher told him about some very definite political views that provoked my question. My question and concern also stem from my kids coming home when they were in high school and college expounding some extremist left indoctrination from a teacher regarding the current politics of our government.
A:I get the feeling a lot of the people replying negatively here are old and haven't gone to school in decades. Fact is: there are many professors of history, psychology, sociology, anthropology &, of course, political science professors push their BS political jargon down every students throat. Sure, maybe they don't do it all of the time. But they do it from time to time whenever they feel (and of course, some do it all the time (like the guy in the example below)).
I'm a moderate (not conservative - I personally don't like Bush), but even I get offended when this happened:
My anthropology professor told the class that a great example of institutionalized racism was the "fact" that George Bush is a racist who purposely allowed Katrina to mull through New Orleans because he "hated black people." When some students opposed the view he patronized by replying "those who didn't realize that obviously missed the boat" ... what the hell does "miss the boat" mean anyway?
Anyway, the conversation was unnecessary and any talk of a political leader or any person in general unrelated to the subject (whether it be Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Carter, I don't care) shouldn't be pursued if it is merely for the professor to boast about a view point they have. He loosely tried to tie race relations (which was the subject... it being Anthropology after all) with current events by bashing a political figure he disagreed with.
