100% Q: Everyday Math?
Does anyone use this math program? My son is in the 4th grade, and his school uses this program, and it is way too hard. What do you think?
A:I'm a Malaysian and as far as i know there's no such program in our school yet all maths need to be practice daily and make it as routine as possible just to make us better in math. How does the program works anyway?does it put some fun factor into learning math skills? Can it make learning math become more joyable? If the answer is yes then i think it's a good start. But if you think the program is hard to keep up with, perhaps you need a better approach for your son to learn math easier. All the best!

100% Q: How do we use math everyday?
I have to do a math project. "The point is to apply algebraic techniques to daily living AND to demonstrate that you understand APA style." It needs to be at least 3 pages so it has to be somewhat substantial. Can anyone think of a way that someone would use math, in depth, every day?
A:I use it when shopping for food for the after school program that I work for. For example, each child is supposed to get 3/4 cups of cereal each Wednesday. So if I'm buying for 80 children I need to be sure that I'm buying enough boxes of cereal to feed each child 3/4 cups of cereal. I look at the serving amount on the side of the box to see how many servings are there. If the serving size is 3/4 cups then it's fairly easy to figure out, if there's 10 servings per box and each serving is 3/4 cups, then I know I only have to buy 8 boxes. However, if there are 10 servings per box but each serving is 1 1/2 cup, then 8 boxes would be too much, so I have to use math to figure out the right number of boxes. I would times 1 1/2 or 1/5 by the number of servings per box, 10, to find out how much cereal was in each box. I would then divide by 3/4 or .75 to see how many servings of 3/4 cups I could get out of the box. When I was learning fractions and math I never thought I'd use them quite that much, but that's just one way that I use them in daily life.

100% Q: I would especially like to hear from K teachers. Is your school system using Everyday Math?
Our school system will be adopting a new math series for next year. One of the series we are investigating is Everyday Math. I would like to know your opinion of this series from a teacher's standpoint and also from a parent's standpoint. What are the positive traits of this series as compared to what you were using previously? What are the downfalls? I would especially like to hear from kindergarten teachers as that is the grade I have been teaching for 26 years. The math series we are currently using is Saxon. Any opinions of Everyday Math will be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know the time requirements per day for this series. From what I have been reading (and unfortunately we were not given a lesson book but more of a resource book for K-3), it appears that you need approx. an hour per day.
A:We have had everday math here for about 7 years in grades 4-6. We use Saxon for K-3. Our test scores are really coming up and the next score level is the top for us!! Oh sweet p....go volunteer and see for yourself!! **we were told the first year to use all morning if needed. After, that 11/2 hr.
