100% Q: Which is better to go to for suspected PCOS - OB/GYN or Endocrinologist?
I've suspected for years that I have PCOS. I have half or more of the symptoms. I'm 19 now and I'm finally going to get it seen about. I'm not sure which kind of doctor I should or to though.
I've heard that an endocrinologist would be best, but then I've also heard that OB/GYN would be best.
I've heard that an OB/GYN will normally send you to an endocrinologist, and if that's the case I'd rather go straight to one to begin with.
Please tell me if you have any experiences with either, and if you could, please share the basics of what they do when checking you out. I would really appreciate it.
Thank you!
A:You may need to see your OB/GYN to get a referral to the endocrinologist in order for your health insurance to cover it. Check into your insurance policy to see what is required before seeing a specialist. I had to do it that way when I was diagnosed with PCOS in high school.
The OB/GYN is going to do a pelvic exam on you to make sure everything is physically OK. If you decide to have the OB/GYN treat your PCOS, she will probably run a few blood tests and order an ultrasound. The results of those tests will determine what course of treatment the doctor thinks you should use.
If you go to the endocrinologist, they will probably want you to have had a pelvic exam, which is another good reason for heading to the OB/GYN first. They will also start with bloodwork and an ultrasound, then work from there. I worked with an endocrinologist for years on my PCOS, she saw me several times a year for exams and bloodwork. I had MRIs done, and spent a weekend in the hospital once for a fasting glucose level check (no food for 3 days, and I still gained a couple of pounds).
I can't say for sure what kind of treatment you are going to end up getting, because it is all based on your body. Generally though, they like to use birth control pills in women who are not trying to get pregnant. Shutting the ovaries down with the pill makes them stop overproducing testosterone and insulin, letting the symptoms of the PCOS subside. Depending on your level of insulin resistance, you may get put on Metformin or other diabetes medications that help counteract the high levels of insulin in your bloodstream.

100% Q: Dermatologist or endocrinologist? (PCOS)?
I'm a 17 yr old girl recently diagnosed with PCOS...my regular doctor just tested my blood levels and saw that my testosterone was high. She prescribed trinessa (birth control) which had caused my periods to become regular, but my acne hasn't really cleared up (I think I have cystic acne).
My question is, would it be best to see an endocrinologist first, or the the derm?
Yeah, a nutritionist actually did tell me that about the GI diet...it's just so hard because it eliminates a lot of carbs and we love our pizza and pasta at my house! lol I am trying though. What are some good foods you recommend that are low GI?
I'm not overweight, although I could be a little thinner, so I'm trying to lose some weight as well.

100% Q: Endocrinologist Help? and PCOS?
ok i have an endocrinologist appointment thursday i have to go because the doctor has diagnosed me with PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) and she also thinks i have type 2 diabetes....can someone explain to me abut what will happen and possibly what hell be looking for or in? lol...and if you have pcos please tell me how you deal with it ^_^ have a good day and thx in advance
A:They will run tests to see if you could be Diabetic, check kidney function with a 24 hour urine test, check other hormone levels such as testosterone, thyroid.
Women with PCOS are also prone to possibly getting osteoporosis if they have irregular periods because of the PCOS.
I take the birth control pill along with a water pill called Aldactone to help me with my PCOS.
As for how I deal with it I just take it one day at a time and have also created a good support network for myself.
