People pick and mix their beliefs and values as much as they mix Chinese and Mexican food in one meal. (Curry and chips anyone?) The established church has to contend with this. And while increasingly people talk more of 'spirituality' and their 'own paths' then organised religion struggles to find a place. Even Christians often now talk of a 'personal relationship' with Christ. What place then the rituals and dogma of church attendance? The largest congregations are increasingly the Adventists, the Evangelists. The new, 'exciting' denominations. Plus for many immigrants Catholicism, which still holds sway over much of Africa, Eastern Europe and Central America. The C of E has to contend with a congregation that is split over issues such as homosexuality, the ordination of women and ecumenism. So while I do not believe it can be said that the Church is irrelevant, I think it is struggling to come out of the 1950s and into the new millennium.
