100% Q: Is copying dictionary definitions and using them to make money illegal?
If one used dictionary definitions on their website, and used them to make money, is this a violation of copyright laws?
If they were cited on the website, would it be illegal?
A:I do not feel it is illegal if you use the definition and give the credit from where it came. If you are using the definition and not quoting the source, it would be illegal in my opinion. It is always best to give the credit for something like a definition. Most people will know that you did not create it and it would be a reflection upon you and your work. Many times people quote definitions in their writing and if they give the source of the definition it is fitting and right. Therefore it is not illegal.
I have used definitions in some of my writing but I always give the credit to the source I use. In some cases I identify the definition and create one of my own for the term. In this sense I am instilling my own feelings on what a term means. The critical point is to not change the words around and call it your own. This would be wrong.
Fair use has been mentioned in other answers. This term can be confusing as to what is fair use and what is not. I feel using a definition from a source and giving credit to that source is fair use. You must however use the words as written and not change or leave anything out. Another critical aspect would be if the source requires permission to use a definition. Definitions for words can be found in several places. How you determine who owns the original is the hard part. I would quote the source and give proper credit.

100% Q: What is the difference between motivation and drive and I don't want the dictionary definitions?
I seem to be lacking both and I'm just curious about what it is that keeps people from getting bogged down, what keeps them going besides simply their responsibilities and commitments.
A:Drive and motivation are kinda best described as
Motivation: a though or pattern that causes an initial ACTION that sets wheels in motion.....aKa inspiration......formation of a goal....where did the idea start?
Drive: a thought or string of thoughts that keeps one MOVING on a path to a goal.....this could also be reffered to as passion......how did you stay focused on the Goal?
I'll relate it to cars if you want too..
Motivation is like torque.....the energy that it takes to set the wheels in motion
Drive is like horsepower....once the whells are in motion horsepower keeps it going and lets it reach high speeds..
As for you lack of both....
People like yourself have still not connected back to the reason why they are here......like a ball of energy that leaves source to grow and experience things....(knowledge and understanding) it may grow bigger but needs to return to its source now stronger and understanding of its reason for existence.. therffore utilizing this experience for a greater good.....
the focus on responsibilities and commitments is just a way to get diverted from your path and get you lost in the details......which easily happens.....You have spent many years learning...through experience or reading or whatever your cup is......and to be quite honest knowledge comes with a counterballance of responsilility......your responsibility is to use it......your free will of how to set the particle in motion......is up to you.....(intent.....= motivation) if you have not used it you start to run out of gas.....and slow down never stopping unless U decide to but things seem very heavy when disconnected.........return back to your source....understand why U are here other than material gain and U will get it.......I know you will.....every human is pre-programmed to understand this....I was like yourself for a while but I'm just starting to get it.....and as a result my life has started to weave back together in a beautiful pattern that I am creating consciously....not by default which is how we think it works.........Your Best bet to Start this re-connection is to understand this idea.....YOUR THOUGHTS CREATE YOUR REALITY....WEHETHER YOU BELIEVE IT OR NOT THEY DO..."
If you can grasp this concept U are much further along your path than you will ever believe....take an inventory of what U think about during the day and give each thought a charge +or - and you will see a pattern.....Good Luck.....

100% Q: What does "first generation American" mean? The dictionary definitions I've seen are confusing.
The dictionary gives one definition saying it's someone from one country who settles in other. The next definition says it's the children of immigrants. Does that mean that my father, born in Ireland, and myself, born in America, are both first generation Americans?
A:No, it doesn't mean that.
Your father is Irish. He immigrated from Ireland to the USA, so he is an immigrant in America. Perhaps, but, I'm not sure, if he gets American citizenship, he could be considered the first generation American.
But, in my mind, since you were born in the USA, you are the first generation American in your family tree. No one else in your family was born in the USA before you. You are the first.
Hope that helps!

100% Q: Can definitions in a dictionary be copyrighted?
Most opening pages in a dictionary say that "copyrighted portions" can not be reproduced, transmitted, etc. Do definitions fall under the "copyrighted portions" of a dictionary?
Best answer will be given among those with citations/sources.
More specifically, Merriam-Webster's Vocabulary Builder. It reads along the lines of "Any of the sections in this book covered by copyright may not be reproduced..."
*Automatic 10 point best answer for listing all:
1. What material within that book is protected by copyright
2. In general, can/are a dictionary's definitions be protected by copyright?
3. Citations/sources for your answers for both of the above
A:Yes & copied with permission. (But who goes to that extreme?)
