100% Q: Hard to Solve Math Problem for My Homework in College Algebra ? Please Help and Please show your work?
russ and janet are running in the apple hills fun run. russ runs at 7mph and janet runs at 5mph. if they start at the same time, how long will it be before they are 1/2 mile apart?
A:1. you an think about it logically first and say that after 1 hour, Russ ran 7 mi and Janet ran 5 miles; so they are 2 miles apart after 1 hour. Therefore, since 1/2 mile is = 1/4 of 1 mile, 1/4 of 1 hour = 15 minutes.
2. to do it algebraically, know that Rate = distance / time.
Russ rate =>
7 mi/hour = russ dist / russ time
or russ dist = 7 * russ time
Janet rate =>
5 mi/hour = janet dist / janet time
or janet dist = 5 * janet time
subtract the 2 eqns:
russ dist - janet dist = 1/2 mile = 7 russ time - 5 janet time
Russ time is same as janet time since we are saying at what time are they 1/2 mile apart.
So get, 1/2 mile = 2 m/hour * time
time = 1/2 mile / 2 mph = 1/4 hour = 15 minutes

100% Q: college algebra homework help?
Need help with a few problems for my college algebra class, if you could help me by breaking them down that wud be great =)
Let f(x) = x^2 = 2x - 3
a.) f(a-1)
b.) f(-b)
State the equation of the circle in standard form having:
c.) center (1,3) passing through (5,6)
d.) Find the slope and y-intercept of 4x-3y= - 12
e.) write the equation g(x) that is the graph of f(x) = Square roote of x shifted 1 units and down 2 unit
f.) Find the equation of the line that passes through (2,3) and is (i) parallel and (ii) perpendicular to the line 2x-y=3
if you could answers any of these questions by breaking it down that would help me trememdously as im studying for a test.
correction for a.) f(x) = x^2 = 2x - 3 Simplify!
a. correction f(x) = x^2 + 2x - 3 simplify
e. correction shifted right 1 unites and down 2 units
A:a. f(a-1) = (a-1)² - 2(a-1) - 3
f(a-1) = a² - 2a + 1 - 2a + 2 - 3
f(a-1) = a² - 4a
b. f(-b) = (-b)² - 2(-b) - 3 = b² + 2b - 3
c. distance² between (1,3) and (5,6) is 4² + 3² = 25, so
(x-1)² + (y-3)² = 25
d. slope of ax + by = c is -a/b, and y intercept is c/b, so just reading the equation, slope is 4/3 and y intercept is 4
e. you didn't say whether 1st shift is left or right. if left, g(x) = ?(x+1) - 2; if right, g(x) = ?(x-1) - 2
f. parallel to 2x - y = k through (2,3) is
2x - y = 2(2) - (3) = 1
perpendicular is x + 2y = 2 + 2(3) = 8
notice I got the negative reciprocal slope by reversing the x and y coefficients and the sign between. simple.

100% Q: need help with college algebra homework?
Solve the following system of equations. Answer x in the first blank and y in the second blank.
4x - 3y = 22
4x + 5y = 6
A:the easiest way to do this would be to do it by elimination because you already have the same amount of x's. You just need to multiply one of the equations by a -1 so you will have a negative and a positive 4x
-4x + 3y = -22
4x + 5y = 6
--------------------
8y = - 16
y = -2
Now plug the value of y into one of the equations
4x - 3(-2) = 22
4x + 6 = 22
4x = 16
x = 4
Now plug both of the values for x and y into both equations to see if they are correct
4(4) - 3(-2) = 22 4(4) +5(-2) = 6
16 + 6 = 22 16 - 10 = 6
22 = 22 6 = 6
So that is correct
x = 4
y = -2
Hope this helps

100% Q: College Algebra (Homework Help Needed)?
First Question :
1/r = 1/s + 1/t
Solve for r.
Second Question :
A student has an average of 72 on four exams. If the final exam is the count double, what score does she need to have an average of 80.
Much thanks for any help!
A:For the first question, you have to get r by itself. If you multiply the whole equation by 'r', then you have 1 = r (1/s + 1/t). Then divide both sides by (1/s + 1/t), and you have r = 1/(1/s + 1/t).
For the second question, you need to find the final exam, or x. Multiply 72 x 4, which is 288. Then set up an equation to find the value of x. (288 + 2x) / 6 = 80, or the average you want. If you multiply both sides by 6 to get rid of the fraction, you have 288 + 2x = 480. Subtract 288 from both sides. 2x = 192. Divide by 2. x = 96. Therefore, the final exam would have to be a 96.
