california recycling program

Recycling involves processing used materials into new products in order to prevent the waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air (from incineration) and water (from landfilling) pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production.[1][2] Recycling is a key component of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.....

100% Q: What does California do to encourage recycling?
If I'm not mistaken, Seattle has a mandatory recycling program. However, I've also heard that many people dislike this method. As a Californian, I'm curious to how California encourages recycling. I know it's not mandatory, so what is it? (This is optional, but much appreciated) I'd also like some additional information on mandatory recycling.
A:I used to live in Casa Grande Arizona and they also have mandatory recycling.

100% Q: What's the best way to go about getting a recycling program implemented ?
I live in Colorado and we currently have no way to recycle at home with our trash companies. IT'S EMBARRASING in such a green conscious state. In California, we had colored bins to put stuff in and a special truck came around and picked up the items. How can I go about petetioning our city and state governments to implement a program so that ALL households can recycle and do the right thing for the Earth. I ride a bicycle, and can't really picture calling a taxi to load all my beer bottles in to take them to a collection site. I know all the Lexus drivers around here aren't going to load stuff in their cars either. And elderly people that want to recycle but can't? Businesses with aluminum and glass waste?? It really bothers me that no one cares. I need some serious answers please. Thanks! Trash companies can recoup some of their costs by reselling the material for remanufacturing. HELP PLEASE!!!!
A:So start a business handling cans and glass. Since you can be paid for the cans (being metal, scrap yards pay) you collect every week. Start in your neighborhood and expand as you can. Purchase some inexpensive plastic buckets to hold them for your clients. Haul a wagon around behind your bike (you can make or buy a tow hook for it) with a big wood box on it to hold a lot and go collecting. Have a place to sort and store and crush (very important for cans) unitl you can get enough to take to the metal collector. Call around and see about the glass as well and do the same. See if the collector wants them whole or broken. later you can expand to other neighborhoods and get yourself a good used pickup to haul with. You can also get local places like parks and such with the large blue barrels with holes the right size in the lids to hold the cans and bottles. Even approach local stores etc. If you put in the barrels and take them away and replace, you'll find several will take you up on the offer as it reduces their garbage. call around to the metal yards and see who pays best and same for glass. Get someone with a pickup or van to haul to the depot. Make sure you collect enough to make it worthwhile (usually like 300lbs). Don't waste trips it costs too much. At first you might get someone to volunteer the for the trips but later you'll have to pay as fuel costs. You'll also later have to get some students to help out collecting and if you do it right you can even pay.

100% Q: Who would I need to contact or get in touch with in order to setup a recycling program in my local parks?
The park that I live near does have a few trash cans, but not one for recycled things like bottles and cans. I want to be able to have a installed trash can for recycling that perhaps once a week, I can go in and collect and recycle those cans/bottles. I live in the City of Oak Park, California. The Park that I am talking about is Mae Boyar Park which I am not sure if it is owned by the City or by Simi Park and Recreation. Who would I contact to be able to do something about this?
A:Good for you for going green. I'm sure California is like New York (where I am) and I'm sure you guys have a California Park's department and sanitation department. look them up online or in your phone book.
