A:Good cheap used cars can come from just about anywhere, if you know how to spot them and have the time to shop around. You can check the classified ads in your local newspaper, check local consignment lots, check the free "autotrader" magazines in stands at your local supermarket, and online at eBay, craigslist, and Autotrader. A:I think the best place to buy a used car anywhere would be a new car dealer. They seem to have a better reputation than a used car lot or a buy here pay here lot. And they have more access to used cars. They can buy from auctions and get "program cars/trucks" that have low mileage and were driven by the brands employees. Usually well taken care of. Or they can buy from rental places like Budget or Enterprise. As far as coming to New Jersey to get a "bargain", you may be able to get a car/truck for less money, and you may have a bigger selection, I would still stay away from smaller used car dealerships and "buy here pay here" lots, and stick to larger new car dealerships even though you are looking for a used car. New car lots may try to pressure you into buying a new vehicle, just be firm and stick to what you want and can afford. If you find a vehicle in New Jersey (I live here) you will still be responsible for NY's taxes and titling fees. Many dealers charge for the service of having a courier do out of state motor vehicle. And legally they can do that. And most, if not all decent size dealerships in NJ will give you an out of state temporary tag to give them the time to get your motor vehicle done. IF they tell you they don't do out of state motor vehicle work, once they give you their paperwork and the title filled out to your New York address, you can go to any local NJDMV and get a temporary tag. I believe the fee for an out of state tag is either $5. or $10. I don't suggest you drive the vehicle to DMV, because it is illegal to drive without a plate or temporry. But people do, just don't get caught! Once you have your temporary tag, you can bring it into NY and do the title and register it in NY. I do not know all the rules and regulations about NY except that NY requires a weight. NJ just has weight "classes" on cars, so you may need to find out from the New Jersey dealer how much the car weighs in lbs. And I also believe that NY requires documents to be notorized (unless that has changed) so make sure any paperwork you get from a NJ dealer is notorized if NY still requires that. So the vehicle itself may be less, and you may have more of a choice in NJ. But is it worth the gas and perhaps any extra fees to buy in NJ? That is up to you. Good luck no matter where you buy your vehicle.
