A:As a prerequisite, I would have to say definately NOT the 14th sonata, like it seems everyone else is suggesting. It's not that special, by Beethoven's standards, just pretty. I'll bet the people who say that haven't even heard the second movement, which is probably my favorite of the three. Aside from that, it's a hard question to answer. I can probably name one piece I think is the best from each genre, but I won't be able to narrow it down further. From the concertos and soloist/orchestra pieces, the Fifth Concerto (the Emperor). Uncharacteristicly of a concerto, it starts out with a blast from the orchestra and rumbling, cadenza-like chords in the piano. This kind of loosened the strictures of this genre, making the way for concertos like Schumann's, Grieg's and Rachmaninoff's. Besides all that, it's a beautiful and exhilirating piece. Listen to the second movement, live if you can. Of the sonatas, I would choose the 29th piano sonata, the Hammerklavier. This is, incidentally, the piece that you may have seen Schroeder playing in old Peanuts cartoons. However, it's not the first movement that's so significant. The third movement is a 20 minute (!) adagio, which is generally considered to mark the starting point for the romantic period. It's a really beautiful piece of work. Then, the fourth movement has an increadibly complex introductory section, which leads into a huge three-voice fugue which is as demanding as a Prokofiev or Ravel piece, but as contrapuntally brilliant as Bach. Among the symphonies, I have two answers. Obviously, the Ninth was a great landmark, using a choir as the only 'instrument' powerful enough to close the work. However, the Sixth is also a great achievement, because it is probably the earliest and best known example of impressionism in music. Yes, I know Beethoven was not an impressionistic composer, but the very title of the piece (Pastoral Symphony) shows that it is more programatic in nature than most of his compositions. The goal of the impressionists was, of course, to give a sense of what a certain picture or experience felt like, not just what it looked like or sounded like. Because the Pastoral is not strictly programatic, it can be considered as trying to create impressions of certain pastorale scenes; the gathering of peasants, the sunlit countryside, the violence of a storm. This is a major development for the music world. Of course, I must also make mention of the Diabelli Variations. I don't particularly like the theme he used or any of the variations themselves, but I respect the increadible array of treatments he subjected them to, and how brilliantly they're written. I enjoy this piece more as a reference work than as listening materiel, but it's definately 'technically brilliant'.
