Alaska Airlines Flight 261, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft, crashed on January 31, 2000 in the Pacific Ocean about 2.7 miles (4.3 km) north of Anacapa Island, California. The two pilots, three cabin crewmembers, and 83 passengers on board were killed, and the airplane was destroyed. Alaska 261 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Lic. Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR), Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), with an intermediate stop planned at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).[1]....

100% Q: There's a painting at MOMA in NYC of a world map, just drawn with just airline flight paths - what is it?
I was at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, a few weeks ago, and I saw a very cool painting, but I stupidly forgot to note down who painted it or what it was called. The paitning is in the form of a large world map, but instead of being drawn with the traditional recognisable land borders, it only had the connecting lines of major international air routes - rather like you get in the back of airline brochures showing you their world routes. In other words a bit like the link below, but without the 'map' underneath. Anyone know who painted it, and / or what its called? I can't find the details on the MOMA website. Thanks v much in advance ... http://www.worldaviation.com.au/airlines/images/fleet/CONTINENTALAIRLINESROUTEMAPWORLD.JPG
A:<>I can't find it, either. Why not call them: 212-708-9400 or email: info@moma.org?

100% Q: Can an airline allow flights to take place if part of the flight is ABOVE a hurricane?
Imagine flying from Chicago to Miami with an active hurricane occurring beneath the flight path but far from either the starting or end point. Since an airplane flies above the weather, will the FAA allow this flight?
A:We would want to avoid the area because of convection (heat rising) and cumulous nimbus (thunderstorm) clouds that would be much higher than a commercial aircraft could fly. The convection would likely cause severe to extreme turbulence over a large hurricane; thus a sigmet would be issued, thereby prohibiting flight planning through the area. However, if it were a relatively minor hurricane, or tropical storm with no associated weather phenomena, it might be possible to plan overhead.

100% Q: What is the flight path taken by singapore airlines from london to singapore & vice-versa?
I cant find a map showing the singapore- london leg
A:While the route from Singapore to London varies depending on the weather -- and occasionally on political issues -- it's generally up over Malaysia, and then Thailand, and then west across India. Then it's over the Saudi Arabian Gulf -- and sometimes part of the Red Sea -- and then up to Turkey, over the Black Sea, then across Eastern Europe, over to Germany, across to Holland, across the North Sea, and into London. (Obviously, you can reverse that to get the London-Singapore route!) The other variant is to go further north beyond Thailand and Vietnam and then into China and then across old Russia into Eastern Europe and onwards. They usually have to avoid the Himalayas and Pakistan/Afghanistan, and so go either side north or south. Hope that helps!

100% Q: why don't the U-tube whack-jobs include United Flight 93 in the insistance that terror wasn't a factor 9-11?
tapes of passengers' phone calls, and the flight data recorders recovered from the crash determined that crew and passengers, alerted through phone calls to loved ones, had attempted to overpower the hijackers. The Commission concluded that the hijackers crashed the plane to keep the crew and passengers from gaining control. United 93 flight path The other three planes hijacked on September 11, 2001 were American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 77. Unlike the other three flights, four, not five, hijackers were on board Flight 93.Ziad Jarrah (Lebanese), pilot Ahmed al-Haznawi (Saudi) Ahmed al-Nami (Saudi) Saeed al-Ghamdi (Saudi) Of these, Ahmed al-Haznawi was the only hijacker selected on United Airlines Flight 93 . His checked bags underwent extra screening for explosives, with no extra scrutiny at the passenger-security checkpoint. Since he didn't have a bomb in his luggage, he was not stopped. He did, presumably, have a box cutter
A:Here is the best way to tell a conspiracy or even a biased piece. They argue one visible side of the story as if it is the only factual information there is. They only present the other side of the issue if they can shoot it down. This isn't enough. It must also have suppositions, guesses, and rumors presented as facts. Then, to top it off, it must treat someone as "guilty until proved innocent". In other words, unless you "prove me wrong you must be guilty". They're easy to spot because the second they avoid these tactics and actually look at the facts, they stop posting. Like Bermuda Triangle enthusiasts who suddenly discover the tactics used by Charles Berlitz instead of just listening to pre-digested nonsense spread by "believers", the issue quickly becomes unpopular, yet the rumors continue for years every time one of our youth discovers some old record of it. It's silly, but a natural part of discovering how reality works. Got to have a parent to rebel against before you realize what a parent really is, and then become one yourself. Same with politics.

100% Q: Why do airplanes departing FCO (Rome Airport) climb in ascending spirals and then follow a flight path?
While departing from FCO (Rome) during the summer months, the airlines always take off and usually do a complete 360 spiral while climbing. What are the pilots trying to avoid as there is nothing in their flight path since FCO is in the middle of nowhere. In the winter time, the airplanes simply depart without any spiral climb.
A:While your answer is very correct (I am a private pilot myself) I finally found the real answer to the question. The real answer to the question is because the Pope has a summer home near FCO and the planes must be above a certain altitude prior to crossing that particular part of Italy. In part due to noise abatement and in part due to security issues surrounding the Pope.
