100% Q: My little sister needs help with her science homework (she's in the 5th grade)?
I talked about it with her and I think I know what the answer is but she wanted to make sure by me asking all of you on Yahoo! Answers that way I can see if I'm right. If the majority of the answers I get are what I got, then I'll go for it. So yeah anyone wanna help my little sis out?
Here's the question:
Which tool allows scientists to see atoms on the surface of a metal?
A-electron microscope
B-magnifying glass
C-light miscroscope
D-scanning tunneling microscope
And it couldn't be B because a magnifying glass would definitely not be able to magnify enough to view atoms...
See, I was thinking D because I'm not sure that electron microscopes can magnify enough to view atoms, only ants and stuff like that. But I'm thinking that atoms are much, much too small to view with an electron microscope. But I think they can be viewed with a scanning tunneling microscope.
I'm 18, turning 19 in 3 days. She turned 11 in March.
Yes but search up 'Scanning tunneling microscope' on Wikipedia. I recently read the article and showed my little sis. We both think it is D, but B would be our second guess.
But you'd still be able to view atoms on the surface of a metal with a scanning tunneling microscope...well, it would be a bit harder to adjust, since it is used mainly to view nano sized particles...
But you can only view large atoms with a microscope, correct? What if they were small atoms? Then wouldn't your best bet be D?
I'm gonna have to go with D. Thanks for the speficic use of the STM in the link you gave of your evidence, cborg76! :)
A:I think the answer is D) Scanning tunneling microscope
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a powerful technique for viewing surfaces at the atomic level
Here is the evidence that backs up my answer http://www.colorado.edu/physics/TZD/SolidStateChs/STM.doc

100% Q: Magnetism 5th Grade Science?
My brother has missed a few days of school and is confused on this question on his science homework. How do you make a compass with a magnetized nail, tape, string and a plastic jar with a lid? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks
A:billebob's sugestion will work if you get very lucky.
What is important is that you FIRST get the nail to suspend from the string and be parallel to the floor. If you merely tie the nail to the string it will almost always end up pointing down.
Tie a small piece of string to the nail's head and then tie the other end to the point. Tie the remainder of the string to the center of the loop. Adjust the position of the knot to make sure it is centered in the loop and the nail hangs even with the floor and not pointing up or down.
Now attach the string to the center of the jar's lid with enough length that it dangles an inch above the bottom of the jar.
Screw the lid on and you are done. :-)
